The aim of this course is to introduce learners to the field of Data Science, including highlighting the importance of this field and its impact on nearly every domain we can think of, familiarizing them with concepts like data mining, data visualization, machine learning, and deep learning, explaining how to build data products and companies, and providing them with the tools and resources they need to deepen their learning.

The goal of the first unit is to provide an overview of the evolution of data science, why it is important, highlight differences and similarities with machine learning and artificial intelligence and give an overview of the data science Pipeline and the main tools used by a data scientist on a daily basis, we will also see an overview of the main applications of data science in domains such as healthcare, education, mobility, energy, finance and marketing. videos will particularly highlight applications that are either ongoing or much needed in the Arab region.

The last week will provide learners with ideas, resources and tools to help them move forward after this course, either by continuing to deepen their knowledge, or by building data products & companies.

What You Will Learn

  • Understand the evolution of data analytics, what is meant by data science and the difference/similarities between Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
  • Understand the impact of data science in fields such as finance, marketing, healthcare, energy, mobility, education and become aware of its business and social impact potential in the Arab world
  • Understand the data science pipeline including data collection, exploration, visualization, predictive analytics/machine learning
  • Understand how data science can translate into building data products & companies
  • Be aware of the resources and tools that you will need to continue your learning journey including main programming languages, libraries, open datasets and other advanced courses/ master programs

Prerequisites

  • It's recommended to have basic knowledge in programming & statistics to better understand concepts & applications

Dr. Ghida Ibrahim

Ghida works as quantitative engineer in the edge infrastructure team at Facebook London where she uses data analysis and modeling to drive decisions of Facebook network design and expansion. Prior to joining Facebook, Ghida worked for 6+ years in various data analysis related roles in the Telco and media industries, in France and the Netherlands, including completing a PhD in Computer Science between Orange R&D labs and Telecom ParisTech in Paris. Ghida launched rafiqi.net, a platform that leverages artificial intelligence for connecting refugees in real-time and in a customized way to opportunities and mentors. She is a World Economic Forum Global Shaper and an expert member of the World Economic Forum Global Future Councils.

Eng. Aly Saad

A data scientist at RiseUp where he uses data science to develop and scale RiseUp’s products with the end goal of transforming RiseUp into a data-driven company. Ali also works with many startups to develop their products through data outside of RiseUp. Ali studied Big Data and Data Science at Nile university in Egypt, and learned Data Science and Machine Learning through MOOCs.
