This course is a general upper intermediate English course that aims at improving the four skills of language – listening, speaking, reading and writing. The first two skills – listening and speaking – are to be developed by the learners through being exposed to the language of lecturing. The skill of reading will be enhanced through the various presented reading skills. Also, the grammar and vocabulary sections target improving intact writing, the speaking fluency, the linguistic repertoire as well as the reading power. In addition it aims at improving learners' vocabulary researvoir. The course will cover the following major areas: • Reading skills • Grammar • Vocabulary

What You Will Learn

  • Upon completion of this course, learner are expected to improve the following skills:
  • • Reading skills
  • Skimming, scanning, and guessing the meaning of vocabulary in context
  • Signal words, text mapping, and graphic aids
  • Inferring, paraphrasing, summarizing, and clustering
  • • Grammar
  • Major tenses: present, past, Perfect, and future
  • The passive
  • Comparative and superlative adjectives.
  • The use of articles
  • The function of some modal verbs.
  • Defining and non-defining relative clause.
  • • Vocabulary:
  • Learning new words independently
  • Teaching students specific words and phrases using certain techniques
  • Increasing the vocabulary reservoir

Instructors and Team

Dr. Rula Al-Naji
Dr. Rula Al-Naji

a full-time lecturer at the department of English Language and Linguistics at Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, Jordan. She has a Bachelor degree in English Language and Literature, a Master's degree in Translation, and PhD degree in TEFL from Yarmouk University. Her research interests include: Teaching English as a second (TESOL) and as a foreign language (TEFL), and Functional grammar.

Ala' Jaradat
Ala' Jaradat

a full-time lecturer at the Language center in Jordan University of Science and Technology. She received her Bachelor degree in English Language and Literature from Yarmouk University and her Master's degree in Linguistics from Jordan University of Science and Technology. Her areas of interest are linguistics and functional grammar.

Hassen Bani Melhem
Hassen Bani Melhem

Master of Arts in English Language and Linguistics, Yarmouk University, 2002. He has been teaching English since 1998. He has been a full time Lecturer at the Department of English Language and Linguistics, Jordan University of Science and Technology, since 2009. He has taught English general courses in addition to many major courses including grammar, writing, reading, general linguistics, contrastive linguistics, and semantics. His areas of interest are semantics and cognitive linguistics.
